Joel Burke, Flexible Trading Analyst

Please tell us a bit about your professional background, what attracted you to working at Gazprom Energy, and how long you’ve been with the business.

I started my career at Gazprom Energy in 2017 after leaving University. Since then, I’ve held numerous roles on the Energy Procurement Desk and currently hold the position of Flexible Trading Analyst.

Gazprom Energy is one of the largest B2B gas suppliers in GB, whilst also having a strong presence in other European markets. Looking back, it was this unprecedented growth and success, as well as the business’ international reach, that ensured working here was an opportunity I wasn’t going to miss.

What is your position within the team, and what does your role involve day-to-day?

The Energy Procurement Desk is responsible for providing our largest commercial customers a route to wholesale energy markets in which we operate.

As a Flexible Trading Analyst, it’s my job to support our flexible products and services, managing the portfolio and aiding our customers in their energy procurement processes.

What makes Gazprom Energy different to other business energy suppliers?

Without a doubt, the values set and promoted by the business. From the very beginning, working at Gazprom Energy has always been about putting the customer first and doing everything we can to deliver and maintain a high level of service. It’s a privilege to contribute to this ethos and uphold these values coming in to work every day.

What do you find enjoyable and satisfying about your role within the business?

I enjoy the analytical aspects of my role. I firmly believe data, and the understanding of it, can hold the key to success in business. In my role there’s no shortage of areas to dive into, from buying strategies, products, the market, and everything in between. It’s satisfying when an analysis piece of our team is used to improve and grow an area of the business.

What skills has your role enabled you to develop, and how do you put these into practice to benefit our customers?

Through my role, I’ve developed an excellent understanding of GB and European energy markets, and trading activity specifics. It’s our role on the EPD to pass this specialist knowledge onto our customers and in doing so, we are facilitating informed and educated energy procurement decisions.
