We are delighted to announce the appointment of Adam Townsend as Gazprom Energy's new CEO, to drive the business’ long term, sustainable growth in the UK, Ireland, France and Benelux.
Townsend’s first priorities are to consolidate Gazprom Energy’s position as the leading business gas supplier in the UK, continue to grow the Irish, French and Dutch businesses, and then look to prudently grow the entire portfolio – both power and gas.
Townsend believes Gazprom Energy is well-placed to strengthen its position and reputation:
“We are part of the largest gas producer on earth – which is also Europe’s largest gas supplier. This means security of supply for our customers and partners. And it also means we are not going anywhere; we have the financial stability to support our customers in difficult times – and also to grow prudently when others perhaps cannot.”
Although originally from Australia, Townsend has worked and lived in the UK at various times throughout his life – including a stint at primary school outside Burton-on-Trent. [His mother is a University of Manchester Alumna.] Townsend studied law and political science (BA/LLB Hons) at the University of Melbourne where he received a Bachelor of Arts.
Commenting on his appointment, Townsend said:
“I was drawn to this role as it was something new and challenging for me, at the same time as getting back into the energy sector. The people here at Gazprom Energy are amazing; the company is full of motivated and talented individuals and it’s excellent that we have so many young people in senior roles. It feels like there are really healthy levels of communication, even during such a turbulent time for the city of Manchester and the region as a whole. Despite the current circumstances, I am very much enjoying being in such a vibrant and resilient city. One of our priorities is to make sure we remain deeply embedded in our home region – Manchester and the North – both economically and socially and draw upon that.”
CEO of Gazprom Marketing & Trading, Wolfgang Skribot, said: “Gazprom Energy is a crucial part of GM&T, and we are extremely proud to have a Manchester-headquartered business in our group. Adam and I worked together in various functions since 2007, and I am pleased he is joining us at this rather dramatic time in the energy sector. We have asked him to strengthen our business gas and power position, to find more growth with our green and carbon products, and to identify opportunities to grow prudently in the UK, Ireland and the Continent.”
