On 22 June 2006, Gazprom Marketing & Trading (GM&T) acquired Pennine Natural Gas, a small Wilmslow-based company run by our Chief Commercial Officer Jon Feingold and his then business partner Arthur Tait (who continued to work for the GM&T Group until last year). Gazprom was always keen to enter the UK gas supply market, and saw the acquisition of Pennine Natural Gas, along with its 600 existing customers, as an excellent base from which to grow the business.
In the decade that followed, Gazprom Energy has gone from strength to strength, increasing its portfolio of business energy customers from 600 to 20,000 and recruiting over 300 new employees.
Jon Feingold commented: “We’ve had many great years and each year beating the year before made it very exciting for me. What’s amazing is that even during the economic crisis, when many businesses were closing their doors due to the recession, we continued to grow exponentially.”
To celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Gazprom Energy, we look at some of the key successes, highlights and turning points in our evolution to become one of the UK’s leading suppliers of business energy.
2008 proved a pivotal year in the development of Gazprom Energy.
With plans to double the company’s headcount in the coming years, new premises were required so we moved into a new head office in central Manchester and the iconic Bauhaus office was our home until 2015.
Success followed success, and in early 2009 we secured a license to supply electricity in the UK. After officially entering the business electricity market in Maywe were supplying reliable electricity to 600 business energy customers across the UK by the end of the year.
2010 was another decisive year in our company’s growth, and saw us partner with GM&T France to create a new sales base in Paris. Between our two regional headquarters, our workforce ballooned by 200%, with 76 people in Manchester and 10 in Paris.
We celebrated our five year anniversary in 2011 by creating the Gazprom Energy brand which launched in September at the Energy Event. Later in the year our hard work and dedication began to truly pay off, and Gazprom Energy was named the Energy Supplier of the Year at the Energy Buying & Supplying Excellence Awards, an accolade demonstrating our commitment to customer service. Shortly afterwards we were accredited Silver status by Investors in People.
We became the UK’s fourth largest gas supplier in October 2012, and were ranked number one for customer satisfaction by large business gas users in Datamonitor’s annual Buyer Customer Satisfaction Survey. On top of these successes, our Silver Investors in People accreditation was upgraded to Gold.
2013 saw us sign our largest business energy customer to date, as well as our first ever combined gas and electricity contract.
And, thanks to our commitment to finding new talent, Gazprom Energy was named the ‘Best New Provider of Work Experience’ at the National Placement of Internship Awards — an award we remain incredibly proud of to this day.
In 2014, Gazprom Energy became the UK’s second largest supplier of business gas, just behind Total Gas & Power. From 600 customers to one of the UK’s leading business energy suppliers in just 8 years.
After moving into new premises in Manchester’s exciting First Street development and embarking on a large-scale IT investment project to improve and streamline our service, we won ‘Supplier of the Year’ at the Energy Awards in December, and shortly after we were re-accredited with the Gold standard by Investors in People, affirming the importance we place on our people.
So far, 2016 has proved an exciting year here at Gazprom Energy. We won our largest electricity customer to date and signed our first dual-country contract. And with exciting developments on the horizon, who knows what the rest of 2016 has in store for our business.
After 10 successful years, Gazprom Energy is proud to be among the UK’s leading suppliers of business energy. With our ongoing commitment to customer service, as well as our unwavering dedication to our people, we look forward to seeing what the future holds for our business — so here’s to another 10 years!
