Alexander Walmsley

Alexander Walmsley, Operations & Pricing Analyst

Please tell us a bit about your professional background, what attracted you to working at Gazprom Energy, and how long you’ve been with the business.

After studying Economics for four years at university, my first role was at a consultancy which specialised in public sector procurement. The main reason I applied for my current role at Gazprom Energy was that it allowed for exposure to a variety of energy markets both in the UK and continental Europe. I already had gained some knowledge of oil markets through my dissertation and was keen to gain exposure to gas and power markets in a professional capacity.

What is your position within the team, and what does your role involve day-to-day?

My current role at Gazprom Energy is Operations & Pricing Analyst. My role involves publishing commodity curves, calculating risk premiums and other commodity cost components for all regions and presenting morning market updates to UK Sales.

What makes Gazprom Energy different to other business energy suppliers?

I think our international presence provides us with the opportunity to add insight through applying our knowledge from other regions – and if the opportunity arises, use this to provide value-added services to customers in each market.

What do you find enjoyable and satisfying about your role within the business?

The thing I enjoy most about work is the exposure to both UK and Continental markets. I feel this exposure has been key in understanding the key supply and demand drivers across Europe and how this in turn influences prices in each market.

What skills has your role enabled you to develop, and how do you put these into practice to benefit our customers?

My role has enabled me to develop my technical skills, which has meant that I have been able to cut down the time required to complete simple, everyday work, therefore allowing me to concentrate on helping stakeholders with their requirements.
