Andrew Whiston, Transactional Analyst

Please tell us a bit about your professional background, what attracted you to working at Gazprom Energy, and how long you’ve been with the business.

I graduated in 2011 with first class honours in Geography before taking a job for an environmental company in Liverpool. I was responsible for the monitoring and analysis of petroleum and diesel fuels from shipping terminal to forecourt – in order to reduce the risks of leakage, theft and loss to ground. I started my job at Gazprom Energy in July 2015, attracted by a chance to get into energy procurement and the new challenges posing the energy market industry.

What is your position within the team, and what does your role involve day-to-day?

I’m a Transactional Analyst on the Energy Procurement Desk. My role within the team is to analyse all fixed and flexible gas transactions that are passed through the Desk to optimise performance.

What makes Gazprom Energy different to other business energy suppliers?

The main difference between Gazprom Energy and other business energy suppliers, I believe, is the emphasis we place on customer service. The business invests a lot of time into driving home the importance of customer service behaviours so we can help our customers in the most efficient way, tailoring our service to each customer’s needs.

What do you find enjoyable and satisfying about your role within the business?

I enjoy working in the fast-paced environment and the unique challenges that can be thrown up within the energy markets. I take an interest in the gas market and it is rewarding being able to put my knowledge into practice during work. No two days are the same within the market and it can be exciting during volatile days, as we react to price movements and transact with our customers.

What skills has your role enabled you to develop, and how do you put these into practice to benefit our customers?

Through working in my current role, I have been afforded more exposure to the energy markets and have come to understand the dynamics that drive them. Generally, we speak to a lot of the same customers who have flexible purchasing agreements with us. Communicating with these customers over my time at Gazprom Energy has meant that I’ve forged some strong working relationships – which helps our customers know they can trust us.
